About Larnaca

Larnaca is located on the southern coast of Cyprus and it is the third largest city of the island, after Nicosia and Limassol. In Larnaca there is the country’s primary airport, called Larnaca International Airport, which is a modern airport with lots of facilities. The city attracts thousands of tourists all year round and has numerous attractions worth visiting such as the church of Saint Lazarus, Larnaca castle, Kamares aqueduct and many more. The city is known for Aliki’s salt lake where you can watch unforgettable sunsets or watch the beautiful flamingos that come back usually every November till March. The city has beautiful beaches providing leisure and sporting facilities. The most popular seafronts are Finikoudes and Makenzy, where you can find lots of restaurants, cafeterias and lively nightlife especially during summer season.

History of Larnaca

Larnaca has a lot of interesting history facts. Larnaca used to be the city of Kition in the 13th century BC. However, strong earthquakes hit the city causing the destruction of ancient Kition. Another interesting fact is that the salt lake provided salt to locals, but now the salt is considered to be unsuitable for consumption. Furthermore, Kamares aqueduct was built in 1747 and it used to bring water to the city until 1939. It was constructed during the Ottoman period in Cyprus and consists of 75 arches. Also, the popular attraction Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, which is located on the west bank of salt lake is listed as an ancient monument and it is believed to be the fourth most important in the Islamic world. In addition, Larnaca castle is a popular historic sight. It is located near the beach connecting Finikoudes and Makenzy. It was constructed to defend the southern coast of Cyprus and the harbour of Larnaca and later it was used as a prison. Today it is converted into a museum that is worth visiting.   

Modern Larnaca

Larnaca may have ancient attractions that connect the city to its historic past, however nowadays the city has developed into a modern, cosmopolitan centre which can easily satisfy any type of visitor or local. Many companies invest in huge projects resulting to the city developing so fast. One example is the newest mall of Larnaca, the Metropolis mall, which includes a variety of shops, modern restaurants and cafes, services and a supermarket.

The crystal-clear beaches and the warm weather are essential features that make the city highly attractive to tourists. Larnaca city is a destination for any type of visitor. It is ideal for families, as there are numerous museums to visit and things you can do, for adventure seekers and for adults who like to go out and experience the nightlife. Finikoudes seafront, one of the most known characteristics of the city, is full of palm trees, restaurants, and cafes creating a vibrant and beautiful atmosphere. Many people enjoy a walk in the afternoon there.
